Dixie Red Tomato is a hybrid, determinate variety with excellent disease resistance and the ability to be hot set. Large, round tomatoes average 9-11 ounces at maturity. High yield and very vigorous. A very disease-resistant variety with excellent yield potential. This variety produces large and is popular with commercial growers. Dixie Red Tomato has a tart flavor that makes it an excellent candidate for canning but can also be enjoyed on salads or sliced. Developed in 2014, it is a relatively newer hybrid that has several advantages over other varieties in its class including its ability to be harvested when red or green and still keep the firmness of the fruit intact. Plants have a determinate growth habit that will produce a large number of tomatoes in the spring to summer production window.

 

Growing Information

Tomatoes are in the nightshade family along with peppers and eggplant. Plants in the nightshade family are susceptible to blossom end rot, which is a result of a calcium deficiency. To prevent or alleviate this problem, apply pelleted gypsum at the base of the plant at the bloom set. Tomatoes do best when transplanted, as the germination time can be longer than most vegetable Seeds. They grow very well in our heavy-duty seed starting trays. Plants should be started 4-6 weeks before the intended outdoor planting date.

If conditions outside are favorable, transplants may be planted directly from our 162 cell trays. If conditions are still too cold for planting tomatoes, transplants may be “stepped-up” to 4″ pots to allow more room to grow. Tomatoes can produce heavy fruits and will require some form of support to keep the plant upright. This ensures that plants and fruits stay off the ground, reducing the possibility of disease and keeping fruits clean.

Poor germination

Shipping was fast as always with Hoss.
I had seen a few folks talking about the success they'd had with the Dixie Red variety and decided to give them a try sincw thwyre supposed to have decent disease package. After 10 days only 2 of 14 seeds I recieved have germinated. Not sure if this is common with this variety but definitely won't try these again. Stick with hossinator or red snapper.
