Description

White Icicle Radish is an heirloom, open-pollinated radish variety with cylindrical, bright white roots. This Daikon radish variety is fast-growing and produces uniformly-sized radishes that average 5" long and 1" thick. White Icicle Radishes have a crisp and mild flavor, great for eating raw or cooking. This variety is excellent when cut into thin slices and used to add crunch to your favorite salad. Cooking radishes will eliminate some of the bite or spiciness. Simply slice and sauté with butter or oil for a delicious side dish.

Radishes perform best when direct seeded with a walk-behind planter like our Hoss Garden Seeder. We recommend using a modified #1 plate or #2 plate with holes drilled to the appropriate size for the seed being used. Seed size can vary from one variety to the next, so seed plate hole size should always be calibrated to fit the seed being used. Radishes perform well when planted on double rows or on a “bed” with several rows planted closely together. This allows for maximization of garden space and the tops will help to shade any new weed development between closely planted rows.

Radishes grow best in cooler weather and should be planted in early spring or fall when temperatures have cooled. They prefer well-drained soil and will tend to split if soil conditions remain saturated for long periods of time. Radishes should be harvested at the ideal size for each variety. If allowed to get too large, they will become pithy and not as palatable. Once harvested, tops should be removed for optimal storage. Radishes with tops removed will store in the fridge for up to two weeks.

A must for any garden!

I purchased this specific variety of radish after reading that daikon radish could help repel squash bugs. I grow a lot of squash, I have almost given up on growing the bugs were so bad the last 4 to 5 years. Nothing seemed to help, and several friends have stopped trying.
Last year I planted these daikon radishes half way into the season and they seemed to help. Still had some, at times bad, but not AS bad.
This year I planted them early and I am happy, no, ecstatic to say I found a total of 3. That's right, 3 the entire season. I check all the leaves frequently and found only 1 with eggs. I have harvested about 60# of Winter squash and about 100# of Summer squash, and thanks to this radish have not had a squash bug problem. My neighbors did, i did not.
