$399

Giant Grey Stripe Sunflower is an open-pollinated, giant sunflower variety that makes an excellent wind-break or shaded row around the garden or homestead. Can grow as large as 12′ tall with massive bloom heads. Helianthus. 100 days to maturity.

Description

Giant Grey Stripe Sunflower is an open-pollinated giant sunflower variety with heads that can get as wide as 20". The head size is usually proportional to planting density, so increase plant spacing for larger heads. This variety produces strong, sturdy stalks that can get as tall as 12'. Plant a row of these to create a wind-break or shaded area around your garden or homestead.

Giant Grey Stripe Sunflower produces beautiful blooms to feed pollinators and other beneficial insects, but also makes tasty Seeds once the heads are dried. Roast the Seeds for personal consumption or use the dried heads to feed your birds or chickens. The Seeds are high in protein and make a delicious and healthy snack!

Giant sunflowers can be direct-seeded or transplanted. Direct-seeding can be easily done with a walk-behind planter like our Hoss Garden Seeder. We recommend using a #3 seed plate and modifying the hole size to fit the variety being planted. Sunflower seed size can vary greatly from one variety to the next, therefore it's important to always calibrate the seed plate hole size for the variety being planted. Sunflowers grow well when planted on double rows with drip irrigation. Lay one row of drip tape and plant on both sides of the tape to maximize garden space.

Sunflowers also perform well when transplanted. They grow great in our heavy-duty seed starting trays. Transplants are ready to go in the ground when plants can be easily pulled from the seed starting trays. For increased storage potential, harvest sunflowers when blooms are closed. Blooms will then open when cut and placed into a container with water.
