Chesnok Red Garlic

A purple-stripe, hardneck variety, Chesnok Red Hardneck Garlic is known to be the best 'baking' garlic. Native to the Republic of Georgia, Chesnok, also known as Shvelisi, is a versatile variety that tends to hold its shape and sweet flavor well. It's a perfect choice for dishes where you don't want too much heat. This easy-to-grow variety performs best in USDA growing zones 5-10, averaging 8-10 cloves per bulb. Allium sativum. We offer 4 bulb, 10 bulb, 20 bulb, & 50 bulb variations.

Much like onions and shallots, garlic is a heavy feeder and requires plenty of water and fertilizer. Garlic has a high demand for nitrogen. We suggest fertilizing with a complete fertilizer like our 20-20-20 initially to promote root development, then switch to a nitrogen and sulfur-based fertilizer like our Ammonium Sulfate. Garlic thrives when competition with weeds is reduced. Keep weeds at a minimum with frequent shallow cultivation.

Bulbs are ready to harvest when the tops flower and the cloves reach an acceptable size. Pull the bulbs from the soil and allow them to 'cure' in the sun for a couple of days. If rain is imminent, move them to a dry area. Once cured, place bulbs in a cool, dry area that is well-ventilated. A pole barn or a ventilated storage basement is sufficient.
