Bristol Cucumber is a hybrid, slicing cucumber variety known for its exceptional disease-resistance and perfectly-shaped fruits. It is an early-maturing variety that produces high yields of straight, dark-green, 8″ slicing cucumbers. Plants are vigorous and have a nice balance of vegetative growth versus fruit production. This variety is known to produce a high percentage of straight, perfectly-shaped cucumbers.

Bristol Cucumber is a gynoecious variety, meaning it produces only female flowers. Because the fruits originate from the female flowers, the yield is very high. Each packet of seeds contains 10-20% seeds of a pollinator variety which is similar in shape and size to Bristol. The pollinator is an open-pollinated variety that provides the male flowers needed for pollination. As a result, we recommend planting at least half the seed packet (25 seeds) to ensure the male flowers are present for pollination.

Cucumbers may be direct-seeded or transplanted. If you have heavy weed pressure, you may want to consider transplanting. Cucumber transplants grow well in our 162 Cell Seed Starting Trays. They can also be direct-seeded and will usually germinate in a few days if properly watered.

Cucumbers are a vining plant and grow best when given a trellised structure to climb. Use a strong trellis that is well-supported with deeply driven stakes. Keeping plants off the ground will reduce the potential of plant diseases like mildews and other diseases that can result from excess plant moisture.

Trellising will keep the fruits cleaner and save time with harvesting and processing. It will also help to prevent fruit discoloration or yellowing from sitting on the soil surface. Our Hortonova Trellis Netting works great for trellising cucumbers and is easy to install.
