Be sure to check out our Lettuce Growing Guide to learn more about how to successfully grow lettuce.

Salad Bowl Red Lettuce is an open-pollinated, heirloom variety that provides brilliant color to any tossed salad mix. Heads contain dark red leaves that are deeply incised and resemble oak leaves. The red color will be more pronounced in periods of cooler weather. This is an early maturing variety that produces heads that can get as large as 6" tall and 12" wide. It is very slow to bolt and has great holding ability in the field, which is great for extended harvest periods. It can be used as a cut and come again crop with multiple harvests. Leaves are crisp and delicious. Use Salad Bowl Red in conjunction with a green lettuce to make colorful, tossed garden salads.

Salad Bowl Red Lettuce performs best when transplanted. Transplanting allows for more consistent plant spacing and prevents seedlings from competing with weeds in the early stages of the plant. We recommend starting transplants 3-4 weeks before the desired outdoor planting date. Thin plants to one seed per cell to ensure adequate growing space. Salad Bowl Red transplants grow great in our heavy-duty seed starting trays, where they develop a solid root ball with roots that are trained to grow downward. Lettuce transplants will need adequate fertilization once seedlings form the first set of true leaves. We recommend injecting 20-20-2o through the seedling watering system at least once a week to ensure plants are sufficiently fed.
