Be sure to check out our Kohlrabi Growing Guide for more tips and tricks on successfully growing kohlrabi.

Quickstar Kohlrabi is a hybrid, kohlrabi variety with an early-maturity and uniform harvests. Unlike some open-pollinated varieties Quickstar Kohlrabi bulbs do not get pithy or tough at larger bulb sizes. Bulbs are pale green, slightly flattened and average 4-5" in diameter at full maturity. The leaves taste similar to kale greens, while the bulbs provide a mild flavor that resembles a combination of turnip and cabbage.

Kohlrabi bulbs grow above the soil and have a pale green exterior with a white flesh. The texture is crunchy and is excellent prepared raw as a slaw or an addition to salads. Shred or slice the bulbs and mix with balsamic vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper for a quick, delicious treat. They can also be cooked and make a nice, crunchy addition to your favorite vegetable stir-fry. Kohlrabi bulbs can be harvested at about 3" in diameter, or about the size of a tennis ball. They can also be allowed to reach larger sizes for heavier harvests. Excess moisture should be monitored, as this can cause bulbs to split. Bulbs should be peeled before eating as the outside is tough and not palatable.

Quickstar Kohlrabi may be direct-seeded or transplanted, although we recommend transplanting. For direct-seeding, use a walk-behind planter like our Hoss Garden Seeder. Use a #1 seed plate with hole size modified to fit the seed. Thin to 8"-12" for optimal bulb production. Transplanting allows for more consistent plant spacing and prevents seedlings from competing with weeds in the early stages of the plant. We recommend starting transplants 3-4 weeks before the desired outdoor planting date. Kolhrabi transplants grow great in our heavy-duty seed starting trays, where they develop a solid root ball with roots that are trained to grow downward. Plants are ready to go in the ground when they can be easily pulled from the cells in the seed starting tray.

This kohlrabi variety is the best one we've ever grown. They are quick, huge bulbs, about 5 inches, and sweet and not stringy. We'll always be growing this variety from hoss tools
