Gold Nugget Carrot is a hybrid yellow carrot with great flavor and excellent production. This Nantes-type carrot has broad shoulders with very little tapering from top to bottom. Nantes-type carrots also tend to have blunt ends as opposed to the sharp ends seen on imperator and danvers types. This makes it a great carrot for slicing into consistently-sized pieces. The gold color is uniform throughout the exterior and interior of the carrot. At maturity, Gold Nugget Carrots will average 7-8″ in length and 1.5-1.75″ in diameter. This carrot variety has strong, dark green tops that make it very visually-appealing. The strong tops also make harvesting a breeze because they can generally be pulled by hand. Gold Nugget is relatively bolt-tolerant and can be grown later into spring/early summer than other varieties. Seeds are pelleted for ease of planting.
Carrots grow best when planted during the cooler times of the year in early spring or fall. Carrots prefer a soil temperature around 75 degrees for optimal germination. They will perform best when direct seeded and are not a good crop to transplant. We recommend seeding carrots in a thick band along the desired row. This will ensure a solid stand of carrots and help to aid in weed control once tops get larger. Carrots are a great crop for double-row planting on drip irrigation. For this strategy, plant two rows 6″ apart, skip about 3′, then plant another two rows 6″ apart. The double row technique allows for easy weed control because the tops shade the area between the double rows. It also allows you to maximize the garden space because you can get two rows of harvest for almost the same amount of space as one row.
