Gentry Squash is a hybrid, summer squash variety that is widely-considered the gold standard for crookneck squash varieties. Plants produce continuous loads of buttery-yellow fruits that have a semi-crookneck appearance a smooth texture. This is the most productive crookneck squash variety we’ve found. It produces well under stressful growing conditions and can be succession planted throughout the summer months. Fruits are best harvested at 5-6″ long, but may be harvested smaller for a more tender texture. This is a great variety for frying, steaming, sautéing, squash casserole and any other squash dish you can imagine!

Squash may be direct seeded or transplanted, although we highly recommend direct seeding. To ensure a good stand, we recommend planting squash seeds every 12″ along the intended row. Once plants emerge, thin plants to one every 2 feet. Squash can be susceptible to plant diseases like downy mildew and powdery mildew if leaves receive excess moisture. As a result, we recommend using drip irrigation on squash to reduce plant moisture and feed plants more effectively. During periods of heavy rainfall, using a fungicide like Liquid Copper can help to alleviate disease pressure as well.

Squash are a crop that will require multiple harvests throughout the growing season. Regardless of variety, squash will have better flavor and texture when harvested on the small end of the spectrum. We recommend harvesting every 2-3 days to ensure no fruits become too large and unpalatable. When squash plants cease production, remove the plants from the garden to prevent any fungal spores from overwintering and becoming a problem in future years. Proper crop rotation is extremely important with all squash varieties to reduce disease and pest pressure.

I highly recommend this squash! It was a great producer for us. I actually ordered more seeds after I saw how productive they were.

First time growing Gentry squash. Made huge plants in my wicking tubs with lots of nice squash. Replanting for the fall garden.

I grew the gentry variety in my summer 2022 garden with great results. It out produced my other varieties by far. The squash have a bit thinner skin that cooks up great without peeling. They performed well in the scorching hot summer heat when the other varieties couldn’t hold up. Gentry will be a staple in my garden for years to come.
