Be sure to check out our Lettuce Growing Guide to learn more about how to successfully grow lettuce.

Coastal Star Romaine Lettuce is an open-pollinated romaine variety that produces full-sized heads of crisp, delicious lettuce. It produces dark green leaves and tall heads at maturity. Coastal Star may be harvested as leaf lettuce when plants are young, but can also be cut once for head production. It is relatively heat-tolerant and will perform well in late spring or early fall. This lettuce variety is great for planting in rows for a traditional, in-ground garden, but it also works well for container or raised bed gardening. Romaine lettuce performs well when planted densely, about 8-12" apart. This will help to shade the surrounding soil and reduce weed growth. It will also allow you to grow a significant amount of food in a small space.

Coastal Star Romaine Lettuce performs best when transplanted. Transplanting allows for more consistent plant spacing and prevents seedlings from competing with weeds in the early stages of the plant. We recommend starting transplants 3-4 weeks before the desired outdoor planting date. These Seeds are pelleted for easy singulation when planting in seed trays. Coastal Star transplants grow great in our heavy-duty seed starting trays, where they develop a solid root ball with roots that are trained to grow downward. Lettuce transplants will need adequate fertilization once seedlings form the first set of true leaves. We recommend injecting 20-20-20 through the seedling watering system at least once a week to ensure plants are sufficiently fed. This can be done easily with our Brass Siphon Mixer and a five gallon bucket. Plants are ready to go in the ground when they can be easily pulled from the cells in the seed starting tray.

cold hardy!

In North Texas, planted this in mid December in high tunnel. We had 2 weeks of super cold -- down to 8 degrees, even in my high tunnel. These survived better than my cabbage, cauliflower, kale, and broccoli.
And, it has gotten past 100 way too often in there...these are doing great!!! Plus they taste good.

Delicious and hearty

High germination rate. Dense green, favorable leaves. Tolerates cold. Pest resistant. Slow to grow, but I had very wet conditions. I cut off one of these at the root, and now, at the beginning of March (9A), it is actually coming back.

Tried these out last year and were easy to grow in trays and transplant them. We cut and come again and makes a nice tall leaf
