Growing Information

Aspabroc is a cross between two types of broccoli: Chinese Kale (or Gia Lan) and Italian Sprouting developed in the 1990s. Plant in full sun in moist, well-drained soil. Its plants reach 20-24" in height and will start producing their first central shoots around 50-60 days. Once the main crown reaches 3-4" in diameter, harvest quickly to encourage smaller florets to grow. Plants will set 3-5 side shoots shortly thereafter and will continue to produce for about 4 weeks in mild temperatures. Aspabroc is not typically as frost-tolerant as traditional broccoli might be, but can be grown right up to hard frost. When starting in seed trays, transplant them into the garden when they have 4 true leaves. Ideal for the specialty markets.

Like traditional broccoli, Aspabroc may be direct-seeded, but it performs best when transplanted. Transplanting allows for more consistent plant spacing, and prevents broccoli seedlings from competing with weeds in the early stages of the plant. We recommend starting transplants 3-4 weeks before the desired outdoor planting date. Broccoli transplants grow great in our heavy-duty seed starting trays, where they develop a solid root ball with roots that are trained to grow downward. Plants are ready to go in the ground when they can be easily pulled from the cells in the seed starting tray.

By far the best Broccolini type we've grown. Very productive and tender stems even when they'd grown past our usual harvest size.
