Join Us! Tonight, we're discussing seed starting for February! Let's Grow Together! It’s important to know when the last frost date is in your area, especially when you’re gardening in the cold of February, so that you can time when to start your seeds. This will differ depending on if you’re growing warm or cool season crops. Also, keep the frost date in mind so you can time when to plant. We recommend keeping a schedule so you can keep track of when you should plant and keep it handy this time of year!

Frost dates:

Warm- seeds can be started indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date Cool- seeds can be started indoors 10 to 12 weeks before the last frost date Cool- seeds can be started outdoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost date

Zones 9 & 10

Last frost date zone 9: February 15th Last frost date zone 10: January 31st Cool season, start outdoors: Broccoli, cabbage, onions, English peas, leafy greens, chard, spinach, kale, lettuce Warm season: tomatoes, peppers, summer squash, cucumbers, melons, eggplant

Zone 7 & 8

Last frost date zone 7: April 15th Last frost date zone 8: March 15th Indoors: Lettuce, Peppers, tomatoes, Onions, Celery, Flowers Outdoors: As transplants: Broccoli, cabbage, kale, onions As seeds: Spinach, lettuce, Asian greens, swiss chard, beets, carrots, turnips, radishes, peas

Zones 5 & 6

Last frost date zone 5: May 15th Last frost date Zone 6: May 1st Cool season, start Indoors (start 12 weeks before last frost date, around mid-February): Leafy greens, spinach, swiss chard, arugula, bok choy, kale, broccoli, cabbage, kohlrabi, brussels sprouts

Zones 3 & 4

To garden in zones 3 and 4, you will need to have frost protection for your plants when they are ready to be transplanted outdoors because temperatures will be cold well past February. Cool season, start indoors: leafy greens, spinach, swiss chard, arugula, bok choy, kale
